EUGÈNE GRASSET (1841-1917)

[L'ESTAMPE ET L'AFFICHE]. 1897.

23½x17¼ inches, 59¾x44 cm.
Condition A-: minor creases in image; slight overpainting in upper right image. Matted and framed.

This charming, allegorical image depicts "the poster" threatening the "cabinet print" (seen carrying a portfolio of prints) with her bill poster brush. It is reminiscent of Pierre Bonnard's poster for L'Estampe et l'Affiche delivering the same message, that the "artistic poster" was the youthful, buoyant force that would rejuvenate the art market, which had relied too long on "classic" prints. And, indeed, between 1895 and 1900, the poster was certainly ascendant, taking such a hold on the public that the term "affichomanie" (poster mania) was coined. Rare.

Not in Arwas, not in Murray-Robertson.
